Chapter 4

As soon as we were in the house, Emma told me that she wanted to shower and freshen up.

She also said that she wanted some time alone to sort something out. So I decided that it would be better if I did not follow her into the shower. As she went upstairs to the bathroom in the master bedroom, I went to the kitchen to fix us dinner. I found myself wondering what Brenda had said to Emma. I figured that if it was any of my business, she would let me know when the time was right.

“Mom said...I should be the one to tell you.” She had come into the kitchen so quietly that I had not heard her. She was wearing the short terry cloth robe and her wet wavy red hair was pulled back into a ponytail. I admired every inch of her loveliness as she came forward and sat down at the table. “She said that since we told you everything else...we should...” There was a long pause as she glanced up at me. There was pain in her eyes and uncertainty.

I walked over and sat down next to her and reached out to hold her hand. “Just say it, baby!

Whatever it is...just say it.” Tears welled up into her eyes as she lifted her face to look at me.

“ZOE IS NOT YOUR BABY, JACK!” She just blurted it out. The tears were rolling down her

cheeks. “I heard Peggy arguing with that Brad from New Hampshire when you were visiting last summer.” Her voice was quivering. “She was screaming at him and telling him he needed to step up and be a father for his baby.”

Emma had to take a few moments to compose herself. “Mom said...since I was the one that heard this…I should be the one to tell you!” she whispered. Her hand was squeezing mine so tightly that my fingers were going numb. “Whatever he told her...she told him to fuck himself

and that he would never see his baby as long as he lived. She would just let YOU think that

Zoe is yours!” After that, Emma was sobbing too much to say any more.

The kick in my gut this time felt like a size 24 shoe was attached to it. I found myself having to remind myself to breathe. Like all the air had just been sucked out of my body. I felt a little light headed all of a sudden and then everything went black. “I’m so sorry...I’m so sorry!” The voice in my head sounded very far away. “PLEASE BE OK, JACK...PLEASE BE OK!” The voice was louder now. It was Emma’s voice.

When I opened my eyes, I was laying on the kitchen floor. Emma was holding my head gently in her lap and was rocking back and forth. Her robe was open in front and her bare breast were just inches from my face. “I’m so sorry, Jack...I never wanted...to hurt you this way!” Her eyes were red from crying and her tears were dripping down her cheeks onto her chest.
